Saving energy and creating a smaller carbon footprint doesn't have to mean giving up things that you are accustomed to. A personal computer (or ThinClient) is not unlike your automobile, it's designed to get you to your destination. It can be a gas-guzzler or a gas-sipper. Comparing full-featured PC's that consume between 350-450 watts of power to a ThinClient that consumes between 5-15 watts is like comparing a Hummer to a Toyota Prius. Both get you where you want to go, but one takes a lot more energy to do the same thing.
ThinClient deployments coupled with Virtualization of your server farm, and the overall reduction in energy consumption doesn't just make you feel good in knowing that you are doing the right thing for our environment, but it is less costly to operate. Running 2-5 PC's in your office is like leaving a hair dryer running all day long. The cooling savings alone are enough to justify looking at going Thin. The more PC's you have, the more savings you'll have by going Thin, and the best thing is, you don't have to give anything up.
Studies have shown that going Thin is not just a fad. Many local organization have already gone Thin. Parkview Health Systems - Womens and Childrens Hospital went Thin last year with over 200 ThinClients deployed.
Schools, libraries, reception areas, kiosks etc., are all logical places to put ThinClients in place of full function PC's where the auxiliary devices like CD/DVD devices go virtually unused. If you need a DVD drive, hook up an external drive that you can reuse elsewhere, why buy one for every PC when you don't have to. ThinClients are solid-state, last 2-3 times longer than real PC's, and are 1/3 to 1/2 the cost.
Best of all, they are energy efficient and have no moving parts that require servicing. Just imagine, no more harddrive failures, no more power supplies and fans that fill up with dust and overheat your processors. No more calls for service because your auxiliary devices have failed. When the externally attached devices fail (as they all will eventually), you just buy a new one and hook it up and go about your business.
Most organizations continue to buy PC's (Hummers) when a ThinClients (Prius) does the same thing because that's what they know and are comfortable with. Some very noteworthy and forward thinking organizations like Parkview Health Systems are leading the way with going green because it's the right thing to do.
